EXCERPT:

Corruption. Mutiny. Absolute villainy was occurring within the walls of his beloved establishment.

Jonathan Tessier had little reason to complain of late. Profit margins were rising, his customer base was expanding, and the recent annual health inspection had wrapped up swimmingly with no findings. After years of fatiguing work and plowing through stress, things were supposed to be looking up for his pride and joy, the Taverne Tessier.

However, walking down the street on this early autumn morning, he was feeling neither proud nor joyous. He could see his restaurant across from him as he stood waiting at the intersection, its pristine exterior of royal blue and beige surrounded by trees of warm hues. When he first renovated the place, he had aimed for a clean and regal appearance inside and out, so even if he could not boast of its size, the feeling of elegance, class, and beauty would still be conveyed.

And now it was filthy. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

EXCERPT:

“Do you really believe we’re doomed to fight each other?”

“Yes.” A tear trickles down my cheek as I force the word out. Anything to keep him from taking one more step into the angry sea.

The singer’s laugh rolls through the mist. “I don’t believe that. Our peoples used to be friends. Tell me from your heart—do you believe the One Who Is has destined us only for war?”

The waves dance higher as his voice passes over them, and I shudder. The ocean is listening.

The Seamother is listening.

Depths take him, he’s going to get both of us killed if he doesn’t stop talking. I slip into the water, shifting back into my sea-dwelling form as I do. With a few flicks of my lithe tail, I speed through the shallows until I reach another large rock, this one only a few yards from the singer. I crouch behind it and speak in a whisper. “Please, leave before the Seamother hears you!”

“My name is Keliveth. Keliveth Dalzana.”

The singer’s simple words send ice through my veins. A Dalzana. A prophet of the elves, too powerful and dangerous to trust. And yet … this makes his claims about the Creator plausible. My head spins as I try to sort out what I dare believe about this man, and I say the first thing that comes to mind.

“I didn’t want to know that.” I would rather have gone on thinking of him as the dream-singer. As someone who didn’t have to be my enemy.

“Why not?” His voice is so earnest, so sincere, that it makes my next words all the more bitter.

“Because someday soon I will meet you on the battlefield.” My voice quavers. “And when that happens, either you’ll die with my spear through your chest, or I’ll be turned to ash by your magic.” I pause, gulping back sudden tears. “It’s worse when you know the names of the ones you kill.”

“Well, then, I guess you shouldn’t kill me.” I can almost hear a smile in his voice, and I clench my fists. Does he think I’m joking?

“I’m leaving,” I snap. “Don’t follow. My people will spear you and shred you to pieces.” I push away from the rock, ready to swim back down to the palace and leave this absurd dream world behind.

His voice cuts through the darkness again.

“Tell me your name. Then I won’t be able to kill you either.”

A pang shoots through my heart. If only it were that simple.

A wave swells before me, rising so much higher than the rest of the breakers that the stone outcroppings that dot the shallows are buried. I grip the rock I hide behind as the water rushes over my head. All thoughts are chased away by the sight of the wave as it arcs above me and crests in glittering white foam.

The Seamother has found me.

Review: Shadow & Crystal Thorns (Fae and Crystal Thorns #2) by Kay L. Moody

Amazon ~ Goodreads

Magical meets deadly in this YA fae fantasy where mortals and fae battle viciously for the same land. Shadow & Crystal Thorns is the 2nd book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series by Kay L. Moody. Be sure to start with book 1, Flame & Crystal Thorns.

War would be easier if she could tell who was right and who was wrong.

Chloe remains in Faerie, but she’s only supposed to stay long enough to defeat the bloodthirsty mortals who are trying to claim the land for themselves. But now she’s not so sure she wants to return to the mortal realm, especially when the devastatingly handsome fae, Quintus, keeps asking her to stay.

Even worse, defeating the mortals becomes more difficult by the day while their numbers continuously grow. She also learns exactly why they want the land. As a mortal herself, it’s hard to disagree with them. But they can’t take Faerie unless they steal it from the fae.

Alliances blur when Chloe realizes both sides deserve what they seek. But only one of them can win.

MY THOUGHTS

Everything you’d expect in Shadow and Crystal Thorns is awaiting your eyeballs between the pages.

Danger. Pining. Unexpected and expected complications. Humans versus fae.

We pick up from where we left off in book one with our duo and watch as the dominos fall and see the ugly that is being committed by the humans who want to destroy all of fae lands (and then some). True to her past work, Moody’s writing is just as well-written and imaginative in this book. Ludo still remains my favorite fae of them all.

Newly re-released edition of “Kingdom of the New Moon!”

“Remember, Eli. She is the key to your honor.”

Eli, an aquatic, human-like creature, has always called the underwater Tognir Kingdom home—a kingdom subject to the mysterious Eltana, who demands a human sacrifice on each month’s new moon. He’s living the life of his dreams— capturing humans for the new moon sacrifice, commanding Tognir twice his age, and enjoying all the privileges his noble rank of Guardian promises, including the trust and respect of his doting father. But when Eli loses his rank and the bratty King Dominic endangers their entire civilization, his perfect world shatters.

As Eli struggles to come to grips with his dishonor and the disastrous threat looming over the Kingdom, he is called to a secret meeting with the King, who offers him a tantalizing deal to regain his rank. But as he embarks on the King’s dangerous mission, he is forced to confront all he’s ever learned about himself, the Tognir, and the humans they hunt. He must make a choice: Will he reverse the damage the King has wreaked on the Kingdom? Or will he strive for something deeper?

My Thoughts

Now this was something different.

Something so unique and good to the point I set my tablet aside to avoid reading the book in one night. I wanted the story to be longer but I’m sure there will be much more to learn about the Tognir world in the upcoming sequels.

The only thing I wished for was for more interactions between Dom and Millie (she could have been a little more fleshed out). Overall though, the story was enjoyable.

Title: Fog & Mist (The Canens Chronicles #1)
Author: Kelsie Engen

Pages: 432
Amazon|Goodreads

A usurper queen on a stolen throne.
A princess imprisoned, enslaved, and believed dead by her people.
A foreign prince searching for his sister.
Each entangled in a curse that threatens all of the Seven Kingdoms.

Crown Princess Winterberry’s stepmother will do anything to prevent her ascension—even if it means assassinating her. And on the eve of the princess’s twenty-first birthday, Queen Blanche arrests Winterberry under false claims of treason.

Although a long-standing prophecy proclaims death to anyone who kills a Canens royal, Blanche is determined to find a way. Step one goes off without a hitch: auction off the true heir as an incognito slave and send her halfway across Canens with Blanche’s most trusted huntsman.

But on the other side of the Seven Kingdoms, an enemy prince gambles his throne and his life, crossing into Canens after his kidnapped sister. The farther he travels, the more entangled he becomes in the Canens Curse, the slavery underworld, and Princess Winterberry herself. Soon, even he doesn’t realize how much more is at stake.

Color me impressed.

Fog & Mist exceeded my expectations with great world building, an interesting cast of characters, and a detestable villain who sees herself as a savior to her barren, snow-cursed kingdom.

Kelsie Engen’s writing is polished and engaging. The allure of grabbing and reading book two is irresistible. I must know what happens next.

(Alfheim Academy, #1)
Publication date: October 14th 2019
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

A new series from internationally bestselling author S.T. Bende.

Aura Nilssen has spent most of her sixteen years in hiding. As crown princess of Alfheim, her life depends on avoiding the assassins who killed her parents and want to destroy her realm. When hunters corner Aura on Midgard (Earth), she’s immediately evacuated and enrolled at Alfheim Academy—a training ground where telepathic teenagers, daily combat lessons, and communication from beyond is the norm. She attends classes that enhance her energetic abilities, labs that fine tune her mental acuity, and workouts with a supernaturally good looking—and suspiciously evasive—training partner. But it’s what she learns outside the classroom that proves most difficult: as Queen of Alfheim, Aura’s grandmother played a heartbreaking role in the death of Aura’s parents . . . and her iron fisted monarchy is pushing the realm to the brink of extinction. If Aura doesn’t take her grandmother’s crown, the home she’s only just begun to love may be lost forever.

When an unprecedented attack threatens the very heart of Alfheim, Aura has to decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to protect her new home. Her choice may mean the difference between survival and annihilation—not only for Aura, but for the world she’s always been destined to rule.

EXCERPT:

I leaned forward, trying to see who Viggo was talking to, but my balance shifted unexpectedly. As I sidestepped to avoid a fall, a branch cracked loudly beneath my feet. I quickly scooted behind a tree and held very still as Viggo called out in a threatening voice, “Show yourself.”

I could take him if it came to it. I’d pinned him in five out of nine sparring matches that week. Or was it three? I couldn’t remember.

“I know you’re behind that tree.” Leaves crunched as Viggo stormed closer.

I inched around the trunk as my training partner’s footsteps grew louder.

“Last chance,” Viggo growled. He was unnervingly close. My eyes locked in on the thickest part of the tree line, and I rose onto the balls of my feet, preparing for escape.

Before I could make my move, a thick hand whipped around the tree to clutch my neck. Viggo yanked me from my hiding spot, wrenching my body into view. He held his arm perpendicular to his six-plus-foot frame, so I dangled in his grasp. In his other hand, he gripped a thick dagger. Crêpes. My hands flew to Viggo’s wrist and I dug in my fingernails, intending to break his hold before my air supply ran out. But as I clawed against his grip our eyes locked, and Viggo opened his palm. I fell to the ground in a heap, then leapt to my feet, brushing broken branches off my pants as I stood.

“You.” Viggo’s normally charming tone had an edge. “What did you hear?”

“I heard enough.” I widened my stance in case I needed to deliver a roundhouse. Or worse. “You broke into Alfheim? What are you doing here?”

“You don’t know what you heard.” Viggo took a step to his right. I mirrored him.

“Fine.” We continued our dance, two animals squaring off for a fight. “Then why don’t you tell me. Because it sounded an awful lot like you broke into the realm, and you’re planning something dangerous.”

“Is that so?” Amusement danced across Viggo’s eyes as anger percolated beneath my skin. I took deep breaths until the emotion stilled.

“What would you call what you’re doing?” I pressed.

Viggo’s features hardened as he took another step. “How was your meeting with the queen? Lots to catch up on, I’m sure.”

My eyes narrowed. “What do you care?”

“I care when someone strips my realm of its freedoms. Not that you’d understand anything about that.”

The anger bubbled again, fiercer. Hotter. “I’ll ask you one more time. What were you doing just now?”

“If I thought you’d understand, I’d tell you.” Viggo’s hand flexed, and his dagger glinted under the filtered light of the forest. My hands balled into fists and I took a step forward. I didn’t have a weapon, but if that jerk thought he could silence me, he had another thing coming.

Viggo stepped into my space, his chest inches from mine. I ignored the piney scent wafting off his training clothes and focused on perfecting my glare.

“Go home, Glitre,” Viggo spoke softly into my ear. “Keep your perfekt little life in order.”

Laughter tickled my throat. “Perfekt. Right.”

Viggo leaned back just enough to meet my eyes. “Someone looked out for you from the minute you were born. From where I’m standing, that’s a pretty good deal.”

“You don’t know the first thing about me.”

Viggo shifted so our foreheads practically touched. Butterflies burst into flight in my stomach and at my shoulder blades. What the hell is wrong with me?

“I know you’re the heir to the throne,” he growled. “I know you met with the queen. And I know you haven’t stepped up to challenge her. I can connect the dots as to which side you’re on.”

A low whistle pierced the forest as I sucked air through my teeth. Viggo Sörensson had no freaking clue. “You know I’m going to tell Signy about this.”

Viggo shrugged. “Go ahead. But for the record, I’m warning you to stay out of it. If anything happens, it’s on you.”

“Noted.” I took another breath as Viggo leaned forward again. His shoulder brushed against mine as he walked by, and the nudging at my back became so adamant, I was positive something was about to crawl right out of my skin. But the jabbing ebbed as Viggo marched forward. He didn’t turn around until he reached the thicker tapestry of trees.

Even at this distance, I caught the pop of his dimple. “See you around, Glitre.”

Then he turned and disappeared into the forest, leaving me with a litany of questions.

What was Viggo Sorenssön up to?

Author: Amberlyn Holland

Amazon| Goodreads

Once upon a time, a rare white dragon, seven treasure hunting wolf-shifters, and a princess on the run joined forces to save themselves and the kingdom from the shadowy schemes of the Grey Enchantress.

Jack has three unbreakable rules of survival. One, never reveal his full dragon form. Two, steer clear of magic users at all costs. Three, always trust his instinct for trouble. And there’s no doubt a princess accused of cursing her own family is exactly the kind of trouble he should avoid. Despite Jack’s intention to keep Kynara at arm’s length, though, her intriguing mix of vulnerability and stubborn determination draws him like no one else ever has.

A fugitive from her own people, exhausted and alone for the first time in her life, Kyn is running out of options. Asking for aid from a band of treasure hunters is a risk, but she has nothing left to lose. To save her family and her kingdom, she’ll take any help she can get. Even from handsome, irritating Jack who despises her magic yet throws himself into danger to defend her.

With the evil Grey Enchantress tightening her grip on the kingdom of Ardell, Jack and Kyn may have to sacrifice everything to stop her.

3.5

I don’t have a lot to say about Dragon Fairest but it is a fun book with great potential to be even more enjoyable as the series progresses. Once Upon a Dragon (book two) sounds amazing and I’ll be reading more from this author again in the future.

If you like fairy tales, dragons, and sweet romances, try this series.

Review: Emmie and the Tudor King by Natalie Murray

Review: Emmie and the Tudor King by Natalie Murray

Title: Emmie and the Tudor King (Hearts and Crowns #1)
Author: Natalie Murray
Pub Date: June 11th 2019
Pages: 323
Amazon|Goodreads

One moment, Emmie is writing her high school history paper; the next, she’s sitting with a gorgeous 16th century king who vacillates from kissing her to ordering her execution.

Able to travel back to her own time, but intensely drawn to King Nick and the mysterious death of his sister, Emmie finds herself solving the murder of a young princess and unraveling court secrets while trying to keep her head on her shoulders, literally.

With everything to lose, Emmie finds herself facing her biggest battle of all: How to cheat the path of history and keep her irresistible king, or lose him–and her heart–forever.

Emmie finds herself in a peculiar predicament when—with the aid of a mysterious ring—she arrives in Tudor England and in the court of a young, handsome king. Indecision, danger, and sweet romance awaits those who read this tale.

The title alone was enough for me to want to read this book. I love reading about the Tudors, but at the same time I’ve been totally burned out on the typical historical fiction takes. So seeing a historical fantasy/time travel book involving Henry VIII’s grandson named Nickolas the Ironheart…Yes, please.

Emmie and the Tudor King is a fun, candy-popping kind of story. I think it had a little bit more potential. With Emmie being a modern girl going into that time period and talking/behaving the way she did, more people would have questioned her behavior instead of writing it off as ‘common’ peasant-like qualities. It was a little too brushed over but all things considered it didn’t matter as much since I still like the story and the characters.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

I hope there will be a cover change down the line because I feel the current cover doesn’t do the book justice.
